We did an interview with the music and band teacher, Mr. Bañas.

Question: Was it difficult for people in the cadet band or the advanced band to be playing the same notes as other people in the band?

Answer: It’s hard in the beginning, especially if people don’t know each other. The more rehearsals we have, the better everyone sounds. Each rehearsal, not only do people get better at their songs, but people also learn how to perform as a group.

Question: Why do you like music?

Answer: The winter concert shows the best in music. It shows the hard work people put into it. It also gives everyone in the school, and in the community a chance to be together.

Question: Can you describe the techniques that you used to help people improve with what they are learning to do?

Answer: Some people learn music by listening. Others learn by demonstration. For some people, the best way to learn is by trying to do it, making mistakes, and learning from them. There is one way to play music, but many ways to learn how to play it.

Question: Is it difficult to keep everybody on the same note when others are singing?

Answer: That comes from practicing. Usually, the more you practice, the less mistakes that are made. Sometimes, it can take a few rehearsals to not make mistakes. Other times, it can take many rehearsals.

Question: Is it difficult to get the chimes to sound on the correct beat?

Answer: It all depends on the song. The harder the song is, the more practice it takes. However, we do exercises that help with staying on beat.

During the Concert

Pre-k started the concert with “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.” Next, Kindergarten sang “Has Anybody Seen Santa?” Then, First Grade sang “Frosty the Snowman.” After that, Second Grade sang “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.” Finally, Third Grade sang “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

The cadet band was after the kids who were too young to join any clubs. They played “Rolling Along.” The members of this band haven’t even been playing their instruments for four months. They started only three months ago, in September.

After cadet band, cadet chimes played. They played “Jingle Bells.” The people in cadet chimes have also only been playing the chimes for less than four months, which means that they also started in September.

When the cadet chimes were finished playing, the advanced band began to play. The song that they played was “The Little Drummer Boy.” The members of this band have been playing their instrument for either two or three years. That means they started playing their instruments in either the 2014 to 2015 school year, or the 2015 to 2016 school year. These band members are more experienced than band members in the beginner band.
