You might see that the Democrats are shown with a picture of a donkey, and the Republicans are shown with a picture of an elephant.  Are you wondering why those animals were picked?

In 1828, people said president Andrew Jackson was as stubborn as a donkey.  Jackson thought that would be a good picture for his campaign.  Thomas Nast was a famous cartoonist at that time.  He drew a picture of the donkey and everyone liked the symbol.  It stuck ever since.

Thomas Nast also drew a donkey dressed like a lion.  The donkey was scaring away the animals at the zoo.  One of the animals was an elephant.  He just happened to label the elephant “The Republican Vote.”  Since then the elephant became connected with the Republicans.

Democrats today say the donkey is smart and brave, while Republicans say the elephant is strong and dignified.
